Fishing tactics for the big Balaton lake

When I started to fish at the big lake Balaton, I did not realise what a big project it would be…
I have spent a lot of time there to find the correct way to catch. I will share my experience in this catchreport underlined with my results of the last months fishing.

Let’s start:
The first thing what I do is scanning the lakebed in front of me. That is the most important step on big waters. For that I use the echosounder and a stick to test the ground. To mark the best places I use a hand GPS. This is also a great help to keep the maximum allowed distance from 350 meters (regulation at Balaton). Sometimes the lake has bad visibility, when the first half meter over the water surface is fully with vapor. This is no fog as you know it, but makes it hard to find the hot spot markers and to find the direction to return back to the fishingplace.

I choose the southern coast with shallow water for my fishing plan. The depth was 1,70 meter up to the maximum distance without any major hump or smaller fracture. The strategy based on the right feeding method. Later I found a small area in about 300 meters distance with some roots which make a good living place for the mussels, crayfish and bloodworms.

I choose my favorite boilie IB Carptrack Elite. The nutrition of this boilie makes it very special for carp! I fed also with 4mm Carptrack Amino Pellets. It was late night when I finished to place all hooks. I was really surprising when I had a carprun in short time after the procedure. The carp reached tens of meters line from my spool till I got the contact with it. I jumped into the boat and I had to fight with the strong headwind to reach the fish. I could stop the fish about 450 meters distance, I saw the display of the radar. The fish reached the deeper water to be more safer. After the successful landing, my first carp rest in the boat!

To overview the last fishing tours later:
I caught many carp, but not the biggest ones. I trust in the places which I found and in my baits, but I had to change the baitsize! The single 20 mm bait was changed to double 24 mm. The pellets also has been renewed to 25 mm size. After a day of waiting I had the result of the new strategy. I could hold a marked carp, with important information for the scientists of Limnological Lab.

I called the application number, than the water police and the fish guards arrived to see that I release the fish.

In the next days many different weather conditions and I tried to change the bait flavour. I put IB Carptrack Elite Strawberry on one of my hook, which also contains GLM full-fat, but with a really fantastic Strawberry Flavour in the background. After a short review, I considered that the average weigh was higher and was growing!

When I used Elite Strawberry, carp were coming in pairs!

The tackle:
To have the best hooking and the maximum safety, I used the followed set up:
Lead: 170g with 70cm of Leadcore. The hook size was 2, the hooklink strenght was 35lbs. The SHOCK IT shockleader I use was 20m long and the diameter 0,50mm.

The quality is essential for safety fishing!

Feeding method:
I use concentrated feeding insted of the wide area feeding. When the weather was too windy at one day, I could not use the boat. A storm warning system is working on the lake Balaton. So it is not allowed to use the boats when the light signals turning to red. In this case I prepared some PVA bags and I walked in the water as long as my waterboots allowed it. Than I put the lead and the PVA into the sand to keep it next to the hookbait. The steam can be strong because of the shallow water, so I hurry up and went out of the water before the storm arrived.

After the storm I caught my biggest carp from Balaton on one of these rods 🙂

A carp around 20 kilos from Balaton is an incredible feeling!!!

We get useful information about the natural sources of food, if we take alook into the carpsack after a few hours sacking. This can be the base of the feeding tactic and bait choice. Well seen on the next picture what the carp ate.

The carp left the seeds for the better Imperial Baits boilies 🙂
